Vox media internships12/14/2023 There are two interesting things we've started doing in terms of optimizing: Inlining small images in CSS, and bundling JS/CSS as well. A lot of it is just due diligence like minifying and gzipping JS/CSS, and serving it from a CDN and setting proper cache headers. We do spend a lot of time obsessing about optimizing our sites, and there is always more to do. If you are curious about the Chorus platform, check out our blog post about it. It's primarily Rails based, but we use a lot of other technologies as well. Glad you like our sites! Our backend is called Chorus, which is a full featured media platform that we have been developing and growing for about five years now. Scott, Dan, and Josh (Features designer for SBN) can speak more to this, This system and process are still evolving, but we love it. The recent Verge ghost-hunting feature is a great example of this - check those fonts and that READ IN THE DARK button! The Vox Story Editor now includes a custom SCSS field, so that custom style can be added within a single feature to create a unique, coherent experience. This snippet framework is designed to be flexible and extendable.įor each feature, designers work with authors to understand the narrative of the piece and to develop a plan for illustrations, imagery, layout, colors, textures, etc. Polygon/SBNU share a set of responsive snippets, though they each include their own variations. The Vox Story Editor allows an author or feature designer to insert these snippets (including lipsum text and placeholder images) to build out the structure of the story. A wide video snippet a staggered 2 column snippet, etc. Each vertical has a set of modular feature snippets: essentially, structured layout legos that can be stacked reordered, and customized. I worked on the initial snippet framework used on The Verge, which relied heavily on 960.gs grid. All three of our verticals are now regularly publishing customized, longform reviews since SB Nation and Polygon are now fully responsive across devices, those features can be even more ambitious than what you see on The Verge. If we can't get to your question immediately, we will eventually.
